My Music, My Way--With Music & Arts

I am not sure if there are enough superlatives to express how much I am enjoying my Music & Arts online guitar lessons! You can read about my initial experience with them here. As each class ends, I find myself smiling and excited to put into practice the skills that my instructor, Keith, has shown me that night.

During my last lesson, I got to hear a long time dream take a step towards reality, and I couldn’t have been more excited!

Since the first time I had heard it, I have dreamed of playing Colin Hay’s song “Maggie” on a guitar. I find the song to be both beautiful, and emotional. I have sung along with it hundreds of times over the years, and it was a big part of the reason I have always wanted to take guitar lessons. I had told Keith about this dream, and he is helping me see it come to fruition. He had given me the notes for the song and had shown me how to play the chords individually. Well, the last 10 minutes of our lesson last week was devoted to playing the introduction to “Maggie.” Imagine my sense of wonder as I recognized the first few chords of the song coming out of the guitar I was playing! Now, granted, it was nowhere near how Colin Hay can play it. But I could recognize the song! I was overjoyed and I could see Keith smiling at my reaction. I know I have a long way to go with my lessons, but that was a moment I won’t soon forget.

While Keith was teaching me about stepping up and down frets, it really clicked for me by watching his fingers and hand moving up and down the neck of the guitar. I was afraid I wouldn’t have the same connection to my instructor in an online setting. I was wrong.

Later in that same lesson, while showing me how to read tablature, Keith--knowing I am a big Beatles fan--had me practice playing the opening of “Day Tripper.” Again, I could recognize the tune that I was playing! I can’t wait to practice that one some more.  The fact that Keith has me looking forward to practicing in between lessons amazes me and I love that he takes music that I enjoy and incorporates it into the lessons.

It has now been about 45 minutes since my lesson for this week ended, and I just realized that the smile has still not left my face. Taking these lessons with Music & Arts has brought genuine joy to me--something much needed in the year 2020.
