Happy Memorial Day!

By Kelli Jones May 27, 2021

May 31, 2021 marks the 50thnational recognition of Memorial Day! Surprisingly enough, Memorial Day wasn’t always Memorial Day! In post-Civil War, different days in the beginning of summer were once called Decoration Day when families in rural America would clean and decorate the graves of those fallen in war. In 1971, Congress enacted the last Monday of May to be Memorial Day. This is now recognized country-wide as a day to remember and honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We all have seen the red poppy flowers that VFW members often give out. Well, the poppy is a symbol of a life lost and became recognized after the famous World War 1 poem “Flanders’ Fields”. The poppy now encompasses all service men and women who have fought for our country and lost their life or returned home to struggle with the aftermath of war. Let’s take some time to recognize those who have given so much to safeguard our freedom and beautiful country!

Memorial Day for many feels like the beginning of summer, garden planting, yard-scaping, and barbecue season! I know I am looking forward to getting my garden planted, barbecuing often, and playing games in the yard with my family! It’s a tradition in Maine wait until Memorial Day weekend to plant but I sneaked some flowers in early! Gardening is such great family time for us! My kiddos love to help pull last years’ weeds out, repair the garden fence with me, and get their hands dirty planting a variety of yummy veggies. Barbecuing after a long day in the garden is just the best! If only it didn’t come with pests! Bring on the citronella candles!
