Macaroni Movies: Cinderella

Kids and parents that enjoyed Disney’s original animated film Cinderella will certainly enjoy their new live-action version of Cinderella. The story is true to the classic Disney tale and much less scary for young children than some of Disney’s other live action fairy tales of late.

Ella’s very loving parents both die—her mother when Ella is very young and her father when Ella is a young woman. Her mother leaves her with the lesson to always be courageous and kind. Her father leaves her, unfortunately, in the care of a less-than-kind stepmother and two stepsisters. Ella has to constantly remind herself of her mother’s words to be courageous and kind, as the trio treat Ella as a servant and are incredible mean to her. She, of course, gets the nickname Cinderella after her stepsisters see her covered in ashes from sleeping next to the fireplace to stay warm.

Ella meets a man in the woods one day (the prince, even though she does not know it at the time). they are taken with one another but have little time to talk. The prince decides to invite all the ladies of the land to his upcoming ball (in which he is supposed to determine a future wife) in hopes of meeting Ella again.

Of course, Ella’s stepmother and stepsisters do not want beautiful Ella to attend the ball as they hope one of the sisters will catch the prince’s eye. Ella is heartbroken and angry when her stepmother rips her dress (one that was her mother’s) making it impossible for Ella to attend the ball. Even as she is feeling sad and angry, Ella shows compassion and kindness to an old woman in need of food. The woman, however, turns out to be Ella’s fairy godmother. the fairy godmother uses her magic to make it possible for Ella to attend the ball but warns her that the magic will end at the stroke of midnight.

Most are familiar with the rest of the tale. Cinderella enchants everyone at the ball, especially the prince, loses her glass slipper in the process of racing home before midnight hits, leaving the prince bewildered and longing.

In true Disney style, the prince is eventually reunited with Ella and they live happily ever after.

Anyone that enjoys a heartwarming love story will appreciate Disney’s Cinderella but there are really no surprises in this version of the film (unlike Disney’s recent take on the Cinderella character in Into the Woods). Parents should note that both of Ella’s parents die in the film which may be upsetting to young children. There are some mild insults including “shut up” and “stupid” as well as some drinking (presumably of alcohol). Overall, the film will be enjoyed by even very young children.
