Mac Movies: Alexander & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

By Kayt DeMerchant, Publisher October 15, 2014
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a film loosely based on the children’s book of the same name, by Judith Viorst. As one of my favorite books from childhood, I wondered if the film could live up to the name. Admittedly, the film is a mere nod to the classic book but one that would likely make Viorst proud. The film is funny, sweet, entertaining and has a positive message for kids (and adults).

Alexander is a typical middle-schooler trying to navigate the pre-teen world of school and family. He often has pretty bad days which only seem worse because his entire family seems to be living a dream life where everything is perfect. As Alexander turns 12, he makes a wish on his birthday candle that his family could experience what is is like to have one bad day. His wish comes true. In spades. Everything that can go wrong for Alexander’s family, does. The chaos of the very bad day is both hilarious and relatable.

Parents and kids alike will really enjoy this film. It makes for a great family date night. Parents should note that Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day contains some scenes and language that may not be appropriate for very young kids. Alexander’s sister accidentally gets tipsy on cough syrup, his teenage brother has a car accident due to cellphone use while driving and there is a moment when parents cringe thinking that some performers at Alexander’s birthday party will begin a stripping act. The film does have some language that parents should be aware of including: “crap,” “sucks” and “penis.”
