Macaroni Movies: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

By Kayt DeMerchant, Publisher April 10, 2014

If you have a Marvel fan in your household, you aren’t likely a stranger to the first Captain America movie, Captain America: The First Avenger. The second film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, finds Steve Rogers (Captain America) still adjusting to life in the 21st century. He’s working with Nick Fury of S.H.E.I.L.D. but not entirely trusting him. That mistrust only deepens when Captain America and Black Widow find out that S.H.E.I.L.D. has a secret organization, HYDRA, within its walls and a mysterious new super soldier working with HYDRA: The Winter Soldier. Captain America and Black Widow team up with new friend Falcon to uncover the secrets of HYDRA and The Winter Soldier. Much action ensues. The film is a fun, deeper look at Captain America’s story that Marvel fans will really enjoy.

Parents should be warned that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is more violent than the first Captain America film although, unlike some other Marvel films, sex isn’t an issue in this film. There is some flirting, discussion of Captain America’s (nonexistent) dating life and a shared kiss with Black Widow (that is part of a cover). Kids won’t likely squirm too much at the kissing but the heavy fantasy fighting, hand-to-hand combat, gunfire, blood and death is pretty intense. Parents should not judge this film’s appropriateness on the first film. There is some swearing, (most prominent is the S-word which is usually muffled) but the more concerning aspect is the level of violence.
