Dear Ethan,

On the day you were born, my whole world changed. I was suddenly a mom. I saw everything in a new light—everything was more beautiful but also more scary than before. I fell in love with your dad all over again watching him as a father. I fell in love with myself as well. I suddenly felt powerful, strong and smart in ways that I didn’t know before becoming a mother. Most of all, I fell in love with you—this tiny, pink, sweet infant.

People would stop me in the grocery store and peer into your sweet face as you slept in a sling close to my heart. They would say “Cherish each moment. It goes by so fast.” I used to really hate that. I wondered why people would point out to me how quickly you would grow. And, I didn’t really believe it. (It’s hard to really fathom how quickly the years will fly by when you are a new mom and operating on very little sleep.) But, today I signed you up for a driver’s ed course, and am forced to admit that those people were right. It all goes by so fast.

Thank you for making me a mom. Luckily that is one thing that the fast-moving years can never take away from me. You will always be my baby. You will always be the person who gave me the greatest gift—motherhood.

I love you. Yesterday, today, tomorrow, always.

Love,
Mom
